How to Crochet an Amigurumi Bunny

This Easter, why not get crafty by making your own beautiful crochet bunny? This sweet baby bunny is crocheted entirely using one kind of stitch - a type of crochet called ‘Amigurumi’, which is the Japanese name for cute, crocheted toys. The technique uses a relatively thick yarn with a small hook, so that the resulting stitches are nice and tight. No stuffing escapes through the stitches, so it’s the perfect way to crochet toys.

If you’re new to crochet, you might find it helpful to read our beginner’s guide to crochet. It has step-by-step guides to many of the crochet stitches you’ll be using to make your bunny.

What you'll need

- 3.5mm crochet hook
- Yarn, in double knitting or aran thickness (we used blue, white, and black yarn but you can customise this project with your own choice of colour)
- Wool needle
- Stuffing

Useful things to know

Each piece is crocheted ‘in the round’ and begins with a ‘magic circle’ - learn how to make one in our short video guide here.

NB: your bunny will be around 35cm tall when complete.

Making Decreases

Crochet two stitches together, into the front loops only. This creates a very neat ‘invisible decrease’.

Work around in a spiral (don’t join each round with a slip stitch). You might find it useful to mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker.

How to crochet with slip stitch

Assuming you already have one stitch on your hook, insert the hook into the place that you want to make the slip stitch, pick up the yarn at the back and bring the hook through both stitches on the hook. Slip stitch is a great way to make joins without adding any extra height.

Make the face with black yarn. Pass the needle up through the neck opening, leaving a tail hanging down for securing. You can give your Baby Bunny any expression you like! When you’ve stitched the eyes and mouth, pass the needle back down through the neck opening and tie the two ends together securely. The ends will be hidden when you attach the head to the body.

How to make bunny’s blanket

Make a magic circle and 2 chain sts (these sts represent 1 hdc)

2 hdc, 1 ch, 3 hdc, 1 ch, 3 hdc, 1 ch, 3 hdc, 1 ch. Join the round with a ss into the 2nd chain from the beginning of the round.

1 chain

3 hdc, 1 ch, 3hdc all into the next corner space

3 hdc, 1 ch, 3hdc all into the next corner space

1 chain

3 hdc, 1 ch, 3hdc all into last next corner space

1 chain. Join the round with a ss into the first hdc from this round

You can make the blanket as big as you like. On each round you will make 2 sets of 3 hdc (separated by 1 chain st) in each corner space and 1 set of 3 hdc in each ‘side’ space.

Using the blue yarn, edge the blanket with dc sts all the way around (make 3 dc sts in each corner and 1 in each st and each space from the final row).

Finishing Off

Stitch the head to the body, hiding the black yarn tails inside.

Stitch the arms to the body, just under the head. Stitch the blanket to one of bunny’s paws.

Stitch the tail to bunny’s bottom.

Stitch the legs to the body.
