How To Make an Embroidered French Knot

French knots are a delightful embroidery technique that adds texture to your designs.
Whether you're embellishing floral patterns or adding intricate details, mastering the French knot will elevate your embroidery projects. To learn about other embroidery stitches, see our Beginner's Guide to Embroidery Booklet.

What Is a French Knot?
A French knot is a small, raised stitch created by wrapping embroidery thread around the
needle and anchoring it into the fabric. It's perfect for adding dimension to your work, such as representing flower centres, eyes, or decorative accents.

🧵 Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a French Knot
1. Bring the Needle Up: Insert your needle from the back to the front of the fabric at the
desired stitch point.
2. Wrap the Thread: Hold the thread taut with your non-dominant hand. With your
dominant hand, wrap the thread around the needle once or twice, depending on the
desired knot size.
3. Insert the Needle: Gently insert the needle back into the fabric close to the original
entry point, ensuring it's not the exact same hole to prevent the knot from slipping
through.
4. Pull Through: While maintaining tension on the thread, slowly pull the needle and
thread through to the back of the fabric, forming the knot on the surface.

French knots are excellent for creating floral textures. In this example, clusters of French
knots in varying shades form the blossoms of flowers, adding depth and realism to the
embroidery. By adjusting the number of wraps and thread thickness, you can achieve
different knot sizes for a more dynamic effect.

🧶 Tips for Perfect French Knots
  • Consistent Tension: Maintain even tension on the thread to ensure uniform knot sizes
  • Practice: Like any skill, practice makes perfect. Try creating rows of French Knots to build consistency
