Celebrating St David's Day!

Celebrating St David's Day!

On 1st March each year, Wales celebrates St David’s Day, or Dydd Gŵyl Dewi. It is a day filled with pride, heritage, music and the unmistakable golden glow of daffodils.

Across Wales, children head to school dressed in traditional Welsh costume. Choirs perform in chapels and village halls. The Welsh language is spoken, sung and celebrated. It is a day that feels joyful, rooted and full of belonging.

Who was St David?

Saint David was a sixth century monk and teacher who later became the patron saint of Wales. He was known for his simple living and strong faith. His most famous words were “Gwnewch y pethau bychain”, which translate as “Do the little things.”

We love this sentiment. It feels especially meaningful in the world of crafting. Each small stitch, each careful moment of focus, each quiet act of making all add up to something wonderful.

Symbols of Wales

Two traditional emblems are closely linked with St David’s Day.

The first is the leek. According to legend, Welsh soldiers wore leeks in their helmets to distinguish themselves in battle. It remains an important national symbol today.

The second, and perhaps most recognisable, is the daffodil. Blooming just as March begins, it brings a welcome burst of colour after winter. Bright, hopeful and resilient, the daffodil has become a much loved symbol of Wales.

And of course, there is the striking red dragon on the Welsh flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Bold and proud, it represents strength and identity.

A Celebration of Culture and Language

Wales has one of the oldest living languages in Europe. On St David’s Day you will hear phrases such as:

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus
Happy St David’s Day

Cymru am byth
Wales forever

The day is about more than a saint. It is about culture, music, poetry, community and a deep connection to place.
