Cross stitch is traditionally worked on Aida fabric, but what if you fancy stitching on something a little different - like linen, denim, or even a cotton tote bag? Good news: you absolutely can! Here’s how to do it with confidence.
1. Choose the Right Fabric
Fabrics with a visible weave, such as evenweave linen or cotton, are easiest. These allow you to count threads and keep your stitches evenly spaced. For tighter weaves or decorative fabrics, you may need a little help (see point 3!).
2. Count Carefully
On evenweave fabrics, you’ll usually stitch over two threads rather than one. This keeps your Xs a manageable size and helps maintain a square shape. Take your time counting - accuracy here makes all the difference.
3. Use Waste Canvas (if needed)
If your fabric has no visible weave—like T-shirts or tote bags—try using waste canvas.
Waste canvas is a stiff, evenly-woven fabric designed to be temporarily attached to your chosen material, giving you a grid to stitch on.
Baste it to your fabric, stitch as normal, then dampen and remove the waste canvas threads once you're finished. It’s a brilliant trick that opens up a world of surfaces.
4. Use a Hoop or Frame
Tension is everything when stitching on non-Aida fabrics. A good embroidery hoop or frame helps keep your fabric taut and your stitches neat.
5. Light and Magnification Help
Natural light or a daylight lamp makes it easier to see fine threads - especially if you're working on a darker fabric or over two threads.
Cross stitching off-Aida might take a little more patience, but it’s incredibly rewarding—and opens up so many creative possibilities. Give it a try and you might never look back!
