Each autumn the sight of the Royal British Legion’s red poppies serves as a welcome burst of colour amidst the shortening days, and a reminder of the charity’s vital work. You can learn more and donate to the Poppy Appeal here.
Creating your own poppy is an enjoyable (and sustainable) way to hone your crafting skills while also showing your support for the UK Poppy Appeal - why not try making your own crochet poppy brooch?
If you’re new to crochet, you might find it helpful to read our beginner’s guide to crochet, which has step-by-step guides to the crochet stitches you’ll be using in this project.
What you’ll need
- Approximately 4g of red double knitting yarn
- Scrap of black yarn
- Scrap of green yarn
- 4mm crochet hook
- Wool needle
- Brooch back
- Scissors
Step 1: make the poppy petals
With red yarn, double crochet 12 stitches into a magic ring and pull tight.
Join the ring with a slip stitch into the first double crochet on the ring.
*Chain 4 stitches.
1 treble into the double crochet at the bottom of these 4 chain stitches.
2 trebles into the next double crochet.
2 trebles into the next double crochet.
1 treble into the next double crochet.
Chain 4 stitches.
Slip stitch into the double crochet at the bottom of these 4 chain stitches.**
Repeat from * to ** twice more to make 3 petals in total.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Step 2: make the poppy seeds
With black yarn and leaving a tail to attach the seeds to the poppy, make 8 double crochet stitches into a magic ring and pull tight.
Join the ring with a slip stitch into the first double crochet on the ring.
Stitch the piece to the centre of the poppy.
Use the black yarn tail to attach the brooch back to the back of the poppy.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Step 3: make the poppy leaf
With green yarn, make 8 chain stitches, leaving a tail for attaching the leaf to the poppy.
Working back down the chain, make *one double, one half treble, two trebles, one half treble and one double crochet stitch.**
Repeat from * to ** up the other side of the chain.
Attach the leaf to the poppy using one of the tails of green yarn.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hi Suzanne,
If you’d like to print the blog posts, you could try printing the web page from your internet browser, or if that doesn’t work, you could cut and paste the text into a Word document and print that :-)
