Use this simple heart pattern to stitch your design onto the Aida fabric. I've put the heart at the bottom of my bookmark but you can also stitch all along the bookmark if you like! If you’re new to cross stitch, don’t worry! Below, I’ll guide you through the basic stitches and finishing techniques.

How to Start Cross Stitching

1. Thread your needle with a single strand of embroidery thread, measuring roughly 100cm in length.

2. Pull the needle to the middle of the thread, so you have two equal lengths hanging together.

3. Tie a double knot at the loose ends - this will secure the needle in place and prevent it from slipping.

4. Begin your first half stitch by bringing the needle up through the fabric.

5. Before completing the full stitch, pass the needle through the loop at the back - this will help secure your thread neatly without needing an extra knot.

6. Now you’re ready to continue stitching, following the pattern to bring your design to life!

How to Stitch a Cross Stitch

1. Start from the centre of the pattern, thread your needle through the bottom left to the top right of the square (/)

2. Thread your needle through the bottom right to the top left of the square, completing the cross stitch (\)

How to Stitch a Cross Stitch Line

1. Begin with a row of half stitches by working diagonal lines in one direction, bottom left to top right (///).

2. Then, work back in the opposite direction, bottom right to top left (\\\) to complete the crosses.

3. This method keeps your stitches neat and even!

How to Finish a Thread

1. When you reach the end of your thread, turn your work over.

2. Use your needle to thread the tail under the back of a few stitches to secure it.

3. Trim any excess thread and start with a new piece if needed.
