The Most Common Complaints About Felting Needles (and How to Avoid Them)

If you’ve spent any time needle felting, you’ll know one thing for certain:

Felting needles can be frustrating.

From sudden breakages to confusing sizes, they’re one of the most common sources of complaints - especially for beginners. The good news? Most of these issues are completely avoidable once you understand what’s going on.

Let’s look at the most common complaints about felting needles and what you can do about them.

1. “My needles keep breaking!”

This is by far the most common frustration.

Felting needles are very fine and brittle by design, which means they can snap if:

- You bend them while felting

- You pull them out at an angle

- You apply too much force

How to avoid it:

- Always work straight up and down

- Let the needle do the work (don’t force it)

- Use high-quality needles that are less prone to snapping

👉 If you’re tired of breakages, it’s worth investing in reliable, precision-made needles like the ones we stock here.

2. “I don’t understand the different needle types”

Fine, medium, coarse… star, spiral, triangular - it can feel overwhelming.

The problem:

Many kits don’t explain what each needle is for, leaving beginners guessing.

The reality:

- Coarse needles = shaping quickly

- Medium needles = general work

- Fine needles = adding detail and smoothing

Our advice:

Start simple with a good-quality general-purpose needle, then expand your toolkit as your confidence grows.

Most if not all of our needle felting kits come with a 'guide to felting needles' in the instructions! This is helpful if you already have a few different types of our needles and don't exactly know what they're used for. We paint our needle tops different colours so you can easily tell the difference between them.

3. “My needle isn’t felting properly”

Sometimes it feels like… nothing is happening.

Common reasons:

- The needle is too fine for the stage you're at

- The wool is low quality

- The needle is worn or slightly bent

What helps:

Using sharp, high-quality needles makes a huge difference to how quickly fibres bind together.

4. “They don’t last very long”

Felting needles do wear out over time, especially with frequent use.

Signs your needle needs replacing:

- It feels slower or less effective

- You need more effort to get the same result

- The tip looks slightly dull

The truth:

Cheaper needles tend to wear out faster, meaning you’ll replace them more often.

5. “They’re hard to handle”

Working with a single loose needle can feel awkward, especially for beginners.

Solution:

- Use a needle holder tool for better grip and control

- Choose needles that are well-made and consistent in size

Many higher-quality needles (like ours) are designed for smoother handling and a better overall experience.

6. “They feel unsafe”

Let’s be honest - felting needles are sharp!

Common concerns:

- Pricking fingers

- Lack of control

- Working too quickly

How to stay safe:

- Use finger protectors if you’re new

- Work slowly and deliberately

- Use proper tools and a stable felting surface

The Bottom Line

Most frustrations with felting needles come down to two things:

  1. Technique
  2. Quality of the needle itself

While technique improves with time, using high-quality needles from the start can make a huge difference in how enjoyable (and successful) your felting experience is.
